What can we learn from what Paul is telling us?
Bible Verse in Review
{Philippians 4 11:13}
“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the
circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty, I have
learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry,
whether living in plenty or want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
Circumstances – What is going on?
• Paul is explaining his struggles to the Philippians to show how to deal with hardships with joy rather
than sadness. (Didn’t believe his conversion/Beaten-Acts 21:30-31/Stoned/Persecuted-Acts 22:22/Ship
Wrecked-Acts 27:41/Bitten by a viper-Acts 28:3)
• He desires that the Philippians will gain confidence from this – To Proclaim the Gospel Fearlessly.
• Paul was making bold proclamations in the middle of Caesars’ realm
Who are the Philippi?
• The Philippians are a colony of Retired Roman Soldiers
• They met when Paul {on his second journey} was church-planting in Acts 16:11-40
• They became friends and they aided Paul when he was in Prison
What can we learn from this?
• Everyone will experience hardships – and if you are a Christ-Follower
• Life isn’t about riches and things – it’s about relationships and Christ
• We gain strength from Him (God) in which to do the things he requires of us
This is a show of where Paul is at mentally as you can see that he is open to sharing his struggles
and blessings with the Church to show them that – it isn’t an end-all when you have problems.
He wants to relate to the reader and the church so we can feel comfortable in our walk with
Christ.
Not even a Chapter before, Paul cautions them to watch out for Dogs and Evildoers and to not be
tempted into sin.
Summarize what you learned:
• Paul sought to share confidence in Christ with us to trust him in all things
• Rejoice in all things – whatever the circumstances
• Even the people we think are the strongest Christians will have hardships not just a select
few
• You can do all things through Him who strengthens you
